Case Details:  

Eight years of torture and a prison term resulted in the death of Mr. Guan Zhenyuan on June 2, 2011.  

Mr. Guan was arrested several times after the persecution of Falun Gong began in July 1999. On one occasion, after being savagely beaten in the Shuangcheng Town government building, police paraded him through the streets in an act of public humiliation.  

In 2003 Mr. Guan, his wife, and two sons were illegally detained and sentenced after sham trials to prison sentences, ranging from eight and a half years for Mr. Guan to two and a half years for their younger son, who was only 13 at the time.  

In 2005 Mr. Guan was transferred to Jiuquan Prison in Gansu Province, where a sign read “Jiuquan Motor Manufacturing Company.” There, 12 prisoners were assigned to monitor and beat Mr. Guan.  

Torture inflicted on Mr. Guan included being hung by his wrists while they were tied behind his back for at least seven days straight. Beatings damaged his digestive organs so that Mr. Guan had difficulty keeping any food or drink down.  

Due to his inability to eat, the prison released him ahead of schedule in October 2009. Unable to recover, Mr. Guan died on June 2, 2011.
